Linda Ashby was searching for innovative ways to communicate to her special-tutoring students about contemporary green when her daughter, planning a association, passed on a catch idea: plantable cards made of recyclable certificate and seeds.

Making cards and envelopes from recycled critique, Ashby figured, would be an superior lesson in how the most mundane items can be reused. So she recruited her paramour special-ed master, Eileen Font, enlisted the management at Cutler Line Middle Middle school and introduced papermaking to a crop that is more familiar with a blinking computer cover than a blank folio.

That was in November 2008, and since then her 19 sixth- to eighth-graders have made about 1,500 note cards with corresponding envelopes -- cards in a rainbow of colors with garden motifs worthy of the finest stationery value. This is no small realization considering the students are intellectually inoperative, with IQs of about 50.

``When they look at what they are doing, at the by-product they've made and they see how beautiful it is, it gives them a legitimate sense of proudness,'' says Ashby, in her 35th year of teaching.

Adds Font: ``The most suitable part is watching them learn and evolve. One undergraduate took a natural liking to rolling. He's a nonverbal kid, but he knows this is his job and this is what he wants to do. He sits himself at the catalogue, grabs the rolling pin, and he is clever to work.''

Of circuit, perfecting the papermaking making line took every so often old-fashioned.

``It's been trial and howler and hit and miss all the way,'' Font says. ``We've done a lot of troubleshooting, but I make up we now have a good system.''
