Depends on what position is the stationery opponent is in. If he is in the official defending position, then it is most likely not a charge. Vice versa.

I have a Lazyboy swivel recliner that I want to make stationery. How?

It sits on a base that is a round wooden pedistal. It feels very unstable when you initially sit, because it weebles and you feel like you're going to fall over. It's between 10 and 15 years old, but it looks like no one ever sat it in. I don't want it to recline or swivel at all. Can I remove the wooden base and have it sit flush to the floor?

Sure you can. Turn it upside down and look for some tell-tale bolts that you might remove to disassemble the swivel base. I would replace the bolts after removing the base, in case they attach other parts of the chair.

I'm sure there are various ways these recliners have been assembled throughout the years, but I just checked mine, and it looks feasible...

Is it okay for a biker to bump into your stationery car while claiming CA law allows him to lane split ?

Hi,

I am not at all conversant with CA laws as regards motorcyclists.

Found myself in a situation today... I was in my car in the 4th lane from the left on a freeway... car was at a standstill along with other traffic... then a bike came up from behind on my left side (he was driving slow).... But then he bumped against my left side mirror while attempting to go ahead.... the mirror fell off... I think a part of the bike's fender fell off too... but he just went ahead & stopped without even bothering to look back... I honked to draw his attention.. & then he just let loose.... yelling... CA law allows him the use of the "white line"... I am presuming he was talking about lane splitting (I did some research on the web on getting home & learnt about lane splitting).... he just kept on yelling that CA allows him to use the white line & that I should not have been in his way,... I told him I was inside the lane... even if CA law allows him to use the white line as he says is he allowed to bang into & damage cars around it... he just took off after that... I noted his registration number & that of witness... I am wondering if I have a legitimate complaint against him ??

Any guidance is appreciated.

california does allow lane splitting. This came about because air cooled MC motors would overheat if they had to sit in bumper to bumper traffic. But hitting another vehicle is NOT allowed, and is called an acident, just as if two cars hit. If he struck your vehicle, and left without exchanging info, he commited "hit and run" and can be arrested. You should always get the license plate of any vehicle involved in an accident.
Report it as an accident to the local law enforcement, and turn it over to your insurance to go after him as well.

bicycle physics?

hey....ever thought why a bicycle or may be a Cd rom falls sideways when stationery but when given an initial velocity it carries on moving untill external forces(wind, friction etc) decclerate it to nil velocity .
1.Why is it still upright when its having velocity(a minimum velocity is required?)?
2.What are the forces acting on the system of the icycle and the surface of contact(counting for mg,normal,friction,centripetal is there anymore ..am sure there is?)
3.This is surely in vertical equilibrum but what about horizontal equilibrum if the velocity is a constant?

Nicely answered Gordon P, but a little hard to understand. What Gordon is saying is:

The wheel of the bicycle is like the toy gyroscope. Remember when you wound it up pulled the string, and got it spinning? It would stand upright balanced on a string if you did it right. If you tried to turn it, you felt resistance, and a weird "push" from another direction.

This is gyroscopic stuff! When an object, most notable a disk or wheel, starts spinning, it will resist any force that tries to turn it from it's plane of rotation-- Gyroscopic force. If a force is applied to the gyroscope, the mass will react 90 degrees from where it was pushed, and in the same direction. So, you push in one spot, and the whole thing reacts as though you pushed 90 degrees up the direction of rotation, and boy does that feel weird! That's part of Gyroscopic precession. The other part is how the aixis of rotation wobbles, or seems to "roll" around--like a spinning top that slowly points from north to east, then south and west, then back to north. The axis is said to be precessing! The Earth even does this!

What does this have to do with the bike?

Well, since the wheel is essentially a rotating disk, it gets to have gyroscopic properties! Until the rotation slows beyond a critical point, the wheel will keep going in the direction that it started to. This is what helps hold you upright on the bike, and what keeps the bike upright until it runs out of speed or hits something that stops it! Because of gyroscopic forces, bicycles are actually very stable unless they crash.

Take a hula-hoop and spin it so that when you throw it, it rolls back to you. How does it stay up during the second that it seems to stop? It's still spinning!

Rockets use gyroscopes to help keep them pointed at the sky. Airplanes use them to tell where the sky and ground are relative to each other.
