A must for invitations!
I run a small stationery and invite business (Quite the InviteTM) and have found this to be an invaluable tool for my business. This book covers all possibilities. Not everyone has use for this book, but anyone who does lots of entertaining or needs to make sure their invites follow protocol, this is a must.
the definitive guide to elegant stationery
A lovely reference book on formal and semi-formal stationery, calling cards, and the proper wording for invitations. Filled with enthusiasm after reading the book, I went into my local stationers to price some of this fancy stuff and concluded that I was better off with a computer and printer. Not that I wouldn't love engraved letter sheets, monogrammed notes, and house stationery, but it would run into the hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the letter sheets and engraved envelopes! However, it's wonderful to press my nose against the window and dream about spending my children's inheritance on engraved correspondence cards!

The sections on the content of one's correspondence were the weakest part of the book. The four-line formula condolence notes did not strike me as particularly consoling, for instance. "Miss Manners' Basic Training: Communication" and other books specific to letter writing give much better tips on how to compose meaningful messages. But Crane's remains the lofty goal for elegant correspondence.

An etiquette book and desk refernece with attitude.
As someone who got really intrigued by parchment and fancy fonts when I got married, I'm rather surprised that the only version of this book still in print is the "Blue Book of Wedding Stationery." After all, one can have a hoity-toity paper fetish without being engaged.

After a few years of hunting, I found a used of this book in a small used bookstore in downtown Seattle, and I may never give it up. Even though the editor (Feinberg is not credited as the author, and there's an introduction by Stanley Marcus) is bossy, unrelenting on some conventions and is essentially pushing Crane's engraving trade every step of the way, I'm still drawn in by the ellegance of "proper" social stationery. It's easy to take Feinberg's advice with a grain of salt: he seems to resent popular etiquette mavens who state that an extensive "stationery wardrobe" is not necessary, and that the most formal invitations are handwritten.

The introduction of this book gets into the history of paper-making and engraving, and the beginning of each section gets into either the history of the custom being described or stories behind that particular piece of social stationery.

I'm a tad disappointed by the section on calling cards -- a small fluffy book I saw on the subject once got a bit more into detail on what it meant if a particular corner was folded -- but the fact that Feinberg addresses the subject at all wins a point with me.

Other topics covered are the basic "stationery wardrobe" for both men and women, invitations to various occasions, wedding stationery (of course), greeting cards and announcements, "professional stationery," forms of address and a brief history of Crane's. The book includes an occasional example of famous social stationery, such as a 1942 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.

I've been online for ten years, but I still love sending and receiving paper letters. "Crane's Blue Book of Stationery: The Styles and Etiquette of Letters, Notes and Inivitations," snooty though it is, nurtures that love like few other books have.

Chapter headings include:

1. The Essence of Etiquette
2. Social Stationery
3. Invitations to Social Occasions
4. Wedding Stationery
5. Greeting Cards, Social Announcements, and Social Correspondence
6. Business and Professional Stationery
7. Calling Cards

When you purchase a pen, what color ink do you choose?

Greetings!

What color stationery do you like?
And do you ever use sealing wax?

I used sealing wax at one time but the seal I used was part of a desk key that had a fleur-de-lys which made a pretty seal. I had to give away the desk and that was the end of my pretty seal.

I usually choose black ink pens for every day, but I do like blue for a change.

My favorite, however, is violet ink for lavender stationery, but only for special
occasions. At one time I had some magenta ink for light blue stationery.

And you? What do you like?

Peace & Love
LPM

I like most colours of stationery. I will not use lined paper however. I always use a black pen unless I'm writing special handmade Christmas cards and then I use gold or silver.
I've never used sealing wax.

I love blue pens! I love white/light grey stationary and i've never used Sealing Wax before.

I like blue ink and red for aggressive letters!!!!

Black or blue...I'm not fussy really.

Bless.

i love copper or brown ink on cream paper, its beautiful.

I love the new multicolor pens that put out two or three colors. My favorite is the type that puts out silver while black surrounds it.

black ink. this photocopies best and is the only 'colour' that has no variants.

black is professional.

white paper gives the best contrast and is globally accepted.

sealing wax is for Royalty.

Hi, I usually will buy BLACK ink because if I'm buying a pen its most likely I'll be using the pen for business matters. However I like to use BLUE ink for all other times I write. As far as SEALING WAX I used it in the 1990s, now I think sealing wax is ancient, hard to find, or to expensive to use. There are so many other options. Stickers and stamps with colored ink and expressions you can now modernize your letters and envelopes. STATIONARY ... I like a white background with designs and figures of Flamingos etc.... to make the reader smile... and make the letter warm an expression of the writers personality.... If its a business letter than a warm cream is always inviting to the receivers eye ..( Ocean..)

black, for it shows professionalism

At university most of the time we HAVE TO use black ink, especially on exam papers and on official documents.
I do prefer coloured inks though, especially magenta and the purple-coloured inks. They look really good, especially with a calligraphy pen or fountain pen.

Black or Blue - roller balls have different fluidity and handwriting is usually more pleasant -aren't pens becoming obsolete with emails?

BLACK USUALLY AS MOST OFFICIAL FORMS TELL YOU TO USE BLACK INK

MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE, PURPLE, DARK ENOUGH TO BE SEEN ON MOST COLOURS AND A LITTLE BIT CLASSIER THAN THE NORM

Well you have restored my faith in humanity! I thought only we calligraphers still used pens and the rest of the world used word processors or biros, amazing!! Do you use cursive script and sans serif?

I'm really anal and have to use black with red for important phrases or underlining. I also only like yellow highlighters.

Why has my e mail started to attach "image001.jpg" which seems to be a small square of the stationery I use

THis blue sky looks like the stationery I use for my e mails. When I send an e mail, nothing is attached by me, or indeed shows as an attachement even when you looks at it in "sent e mails". Thanks
Derek

Not a virus.

Most emails don't display images anymore, by default, so your client is probably just attaching your background image as an image file.

Does Yahoo Mail have an option to use different stationery, i.e., coloured pages, etc.?

I have seen emails which are on different coloured background, with clouds, blue sky, logo's etc. Does yahoo give that option and if so, how to set it up?

I'm sorry, but without Yahoo! Mail Plus, you cannot use different "stationery." However, for only $19.99 a year, you can easily upgrade to this premium version of Yahoo! Mail, provided all your account information is accurate.

Is it "girly" to use lots of Asian stationery?

I only see girls as my school use asian stuff, but I don't think it's that girly, and it's not like I use pink stuff. Do you think if I have blue stuff it's okay?

here are some pictures of the Asian stuff I have
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ajt6rb&s=5

What does your school stationery case contain?

Mine has 2 blue pens, a green pen, a red pen, a yellow highlighter, a tube of correction liquid, a 2B mechanical pencil, a soft eraser, a ruler, a protractor, a stapler and stapler bullets.
It's also known as a pencil case ^^""

2 blue pens, one eraser, one scale, one lead pencil, leads one compass. two glitter pens thats all.

Beautiful wedding stationery, timings and an exciting phone call

For a stationery devotee like me there's nothing quite like seeing stunning compounding invitations!

This week I've been doing some work for a couple I first met earlier in the year when they booked a 'Girls Gloaming In' planning session. I had mentioned to them at our first meeting that Emily & Jo give rise to the most beautiful invitations and, sure enough, they have done just that for Kim & Emma.

I have forth some time this week hand-writing the envelopes in a sonorous purple ink to match the invitations. They look beautiful (if I do say so myself!) and I'm inescapable half the reason is because I absolutely loved doing it! If the soup of doing this amount of writing yourself fills you with horror, or you just can't picture finding the time to do it, and to enjoy doing it, do get in touch.

I can almost promise it'll cost less than you think and I'll happily send you a sample of my handwriting before you turn over a complete a decision and can cross one more thing off your To Do list.

I received a fusion invitation through the post this week and couldn't have been more delighted! A Christmas coalescence always makes me smile, probably something to do with the fact that I married Mr Willson on 29th December. Anyway, this hypercritical invitation was from a good friend of mine and she'd told me over coffee a combine of weeks ago that she'd designed the invitations herself.

Well, it is stunning, and such a simple understanding, beautifully executed. A photo taken by the bride-to-be on a brilliant tropical beach, with the couple's initials and the date of the amalgamation written in the sand (these 2 are well known for their fantastic holidays!). Just from the word 'go' they've injected their personalities into their wedding celebration and I am already counting down the days until December 20th!

Our typical email newsletter was sent out earlier this week and I dedicated this express issue to my 'Top Timing Tips'. From ensuring the morning of the alloy runs smoothly to avoiding the wrath of an unhappy chef, there is at least 1 tip here that is true to help you with your plans. Please click here to sign up to the newsletter and I'll set up sure this latest issue wings its way to you over the weekend.
