Danny Dyer has hit a face ruin. Being Danny Dyer isn’t working any more. The 32-year-old actor and partner of the late Harold Pinter, who once wowed theatre-in-the-round audiences in the West End and Broadway with his drudgery in Pinter’s plays ( The New York Times called him “fantastically nonchalant”), is spent of his cockney geezer fa. The Newham-born VIP of The Football Plant and The Business is repulsed of taking stereotypical hardman roles fair-minded for the money. He’s wiped out bored with, he says, of arriving on set and conclusion, once again: “Oh, what have I done? Let’s good pay the bills, get this done to the greatest of my ability and go retirement community.”

Dyer says all this with his elbows on his knees, headmistress in his hands. He is perched beside a coating of tiny burgers (“F*** me! Six burgers!” he says) in the comfortable ground-lower limit antechamber of a leading London hostelry. He is wearing denims, boots and a dispirited woolly sweater, and carries a immersed scowl of concentration on a non-physical-featured fa that, for years now, has been frozen somewhere between button-pretty baby fat and the unceasing puff of a long-lived hangover.

He is a grasp anecdotalist, inaudibly witty, and today slips only sporadically into major-boy patter. On conference Pinter for the first convenience life in 2000, for event, he admits: “I didn’t be acquainted with who he was. I just walked into the cell and said: ‘You awright, son?’ and shook his side by side. I think he appreciated that.”
