They work just fine.
I don't see the sharpening issue others have mentioned here. Just use an auger style sharpener and they sharpen up just fine. I got a box of the 64 different colored pencils to try different house siding colors. They're only about 3.5" long though, the box size is a little misleading and the colors are pretty much bright colors kids would like. But they're really inexpensive compared to others and I'm blending some colors to get what I want. Well worth the price.

Surprisingly Good! Really!
I recently picked up a set of these colored pencils "on a lark" to use as supplemental to my other, more expensive sets, and was pleasantly surprised - no, nearly shocked - at their quality and performance. It's not that they are better than the best Koh-i-noor or Prismacolor pencils (because they aren't), but the truth is that, for their price, they are very difficult to beat. But price alone is not the determinant factor here: if a colored pencil is cheap but performs poorly, then there is no point in picking it up. But what I quickly discovered with these Crayola pencils is that not only are they inexpensive (they break down to only about 20 cents per pencil, compared to anywhere from $1 to $4 per pencil for the more expensive brands), but they perform exceptionally well, to boot.
What do I mean by "perform exceptionally well?" Let me break it down to a short list so I can clearly present what I discovered with these pencils:
1. The pencils have a generally good laydown of color, with the caveat of the few colors that don't work well (true also of my most expensive colored pencils, I must say). Laydown is smooth and uniform, with bright, rich color.
2. The pencils sharpen very well, with ease of cutting through the wood casing and with the color lead core supporting a very fine point when desired.
3. The lead core seems generally resistant to breakage (a problem that can occur with most pencils, even the most expensive).
4. The pencils are physically light.
5. The set comes in 50 colors, which is a great size for lots of drawing without committing to large collection sizes.
Are these pencils as good as the best Swiss, French, and German colored pencils? No. But they are close, and actually much closer than one would ever think, given that these are marketed as kid's pencils. The price is right, the colors are great, and the performance is really good. How can you go wrong? Five stars for price, five stars for color selection, and four stars for performance.

Even when you get what you pay for, you'll still end up losing.
I purchased a 12 pack of Prismacolor pencils and then I purchased a 50 pack of these crayola. Not only is the lead in the Prismacolor longer lasting than the Crayola's, but you can also forget sharpening them. No matter how soft I tried to sharpen the Crayola's the lead kept breaking. It would take me 3 broken tips for every one decent tip. The lead is so brittle, that it breaks while sharpening like you wouldn't believe. I tested the strength by using one that had already been shapened, and made one light twist. Just one. It came out broken. I would lose over an inch and a half with each sharpen. Being that the Prismacolor's are twice the cost of the Crayola's-yet the Crayola's are shorter lasting, break-easily, and lay more lead per stroke-that makes the Prismacolor a far better buy. This doesn't even take into account the soft detail of the Prismicolor's. Unless you have a Crayola bumper-sticker on your car, own stock in Crayola, or just have a fetish for non-stop utensil sharpening, buy something else. Now, if you'll excuse me; I have a colored-pencil to sharpen and I only have 15 minutes to do it in...

Lead Broken inside both boxes of pencils, unable to sharpen
I ordered colored pencils because I couldn't find them overseas (military) at the beginning of the school year. The shipping time was great, but the quality is lousy. Not sure if the damage occcurred with shipping or with the product, suffice to say that it isn't worth $6 in shipping to return $12 in pencils. My children, who usually don't complain, were both mad because the lead kept breaking when they sharpened the pencils and they had to throw several out. Either the quality is lousy or the packaging was a bad idea (they were not protected in any way, just directly wrapped with a cardboard box that matched in size of the two boxes ordered). The pencils themselves were not broken. Mad at myself for wasting my money.

50 colored Crayola Pencils
I love crayol;a company and when I saw there was 50 colored pencils in one box I ordered right away. I have since bought another set of 50. I also purchased 2 sets of 30 Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils and I absolutely love those cause you do not waste any pencil for sharpening. I would recommend that you increased the amount that you can purchase in a twistable form.

Perfect for little ones
Preschoolers learn better how to hold a pencil when they are short. I got two boxes, one for my son and one for his class, they love them.

ok
tall box, little crayons, guess i didn't pay attention to the label as well as i should have. although it seems that they deliberately try to make it appear that the contents are much bigger than they really are.
definitely won't buy again.

box could be stronger
My granddaughter like that the pencils came in a box with sharpener. But the fact that the box cover started falling apart with her first use was disappointing for her.

VERY SHORT Pencils
The box is durable, the sharpen works, and the colors are beautiful, but these are really short pencils (4" short). I'm disappointed for the price.

Mostly worked
I like these for the bright color and the fact that you don't have to sharpen them.
Unfortunately the black in my set is broken, the lead doesn't stay and just slides back in when you try to write with it

Twistables are for Grown Ups Too!
I'm the one who likes the Crayola Twistables! My kids prefer traditional colored pencils. I use Twistables to illustrate for work and in my journal. Crayola products render more saturated color and the leads and crayons are softer which means more color is left on the paper with less effort. As a design professional, I prefer Prismacolors for color drawing, but Twistables pack better when its time for drawing on the go, and I don't tense up as much about losing or misplacing them.
I think my children prefer the colored pencils because they are more forgiving when dropped. Once the crayon portion of a Twistable dislodges from the base, the product is useless. Their first pack of Twistables didn't last as long as they would have liked. If you have young children and supervise their drawing time, this probably won't be an issue.
Tips and tricks:
- Show children how to expose only a small amount of crayon at a time and never extend it fully out of the casing.
- To get a fine point, hold the Twistable at shallow angle. Scrape the tip along a piece of paper while rotating the pencil.
- Encourage older children to blend colors, warm up the product by drawing on scrap paper first. Then rub the pencil back and forth lightly on your art work in layers.
- The white pencil looks great on black construction paper and so do the blues and oranges.
- Help young coloring book artists use Twistables for small areas like eyeballs, belts, and shoes. Demonstrate how crayons are good for large areas like lawns, oceans, and the sky.

Great, durable colored pencils
These ae great, my daughter can handle them fairly easily and does not need a pencil sharpener.
Great colors and durable design.

Great idea, but poor execution
These used to be great. I purchased my original package a couple of years ago and really liked these. Upon repurchasing in 4/10, I found the formula changed. The pencils are much softer (almost like crayon) and wear out quickly. I think Crayola did this to make the pencils more erasable.
The biggest problem though is that these pencils break way too easily. The thing that holds the colored pencil in the plastic case simply breaks causing the entire 5" length of colored pencil to slide right out of the plastic twistable case. Unfortunately, once that happens the pencil can't be fixed and has to be thrown out.
My advice: stick with the traditional colored pencils and spend your money on a good quality battery operated or electric pencil sharpener instead.

Not so good for toddlers
The pencils are too fragile for toddlers and break easily. Also, many colors are too light and barely visible on white paper.
Lead runs out too quickly and after a few colorings bright color pencils need to be replaced.
These are probably be suitable for kids 7+.

How do you have a crayola pencil in your MSN personal message?
Jan 24, 2008 by Nicholas G | Posted in Drawing & Illustration
I've seen a lot of people have shapes like this ( ( |CRAYOLA| )> or something...
but they have lines across the top and bottom of the writing so it looks like a real pencil!
I can't figure out how to do it :\
If anybody has someone in their list with one, can you ask them how?
Draw the illustration with pencil and crayola. Scan and photograph moving the photo to wherever you want it.

can you buy crayola pencil crayons loose?
Jan 28, 2009 by corsage13 | Posted in Drawing & Illustration
does anybody know anywhere that sells crayola pencil crayons loose? basically i use a heck of a lot of black in my artwork, so the black gets worn down before ive even used some of the other colours...so i have to buy a new pack every time to get the black again...any suggestions? or anybody know of any other black pencil crayons that are good?
I was wondering the same thing. I draw as well and need only greens, blues, browns and grays. I have looked on their website but I could not find any information. Sorry I could not be of more help. Best of luck to you...

I use a Crayola colored pencil for eyeliner. It's never hurt me, but will it have any bad long-term effects?
Apr 13, 2008 by Shandeee :] | Posted in Makeup
Is it safe to do this?
yes it can.. it is not made in a sterile environment and not to the same standards as makeup either..... i mean really is it worth the risk when you can go get a 99 cent eyeliner at any drug store that is bound to work better then a crayola pencil... and if you really want a good one try the milani pencil.. best ever pencil eyeliner.

Are there any Crayola Colored Pencil Color Wheels?
Jun 11, 2008 by scarletswordx | Posted in Drawing & Illustration
I mainly own colors from two brands: Prismacolor and Crayola, but I own more Crayola than Prismas.
And since I found this thread about a Prismacolor color wheel: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=425959 , I'm hoping that there's a color wheel dedicated to Crayola colored pencils as well, but I'm having no luck finding a specific color wheel on Google.
That way I would hope to find the RGB values of each Crayola pencil color.
If anyone knows of said color wheel, please say so.
Yes, my grandmother has.

I'm missing one, don't have the box, and I can't tell which pencil I'm missing - I need all the color names!
And yes - I've tried the Crayola website.
Sorry to be obvious, but have you tried the Crayola website?
