Pencils and Sharpener
I am finding that the sharpener is functional but still the lead becomes a;most a little too pointed for construction. I think it is still handy though to have it around. Its faster than using the utility knife and sometimes or most times I need a sharper edge to mark with. Not all that bad, but might not be everybodies cup of tea. The sharpener that is. Otherwise, the pencils are like everybody elses and work. Not much to say there.

ok so here it is, the pencil is ok as an hvac journeyman using one on a daily basis in commercial construction it ok. however you can prob pick one up a few cents cheaper locally at your nearest Home Depot although it will not be the "Striker" brand it will be a "Husky" but none the less the exact same thing and retails for $1.99 and lead refills also $1.99...hope this helps

Improvment over carpenters pencils
Number 1 reason I got this was because it stays the same length. It is surprisingly accurate when sharp. I've only used it for framing so far but its obvious I'll be able to use it for basic finish work as well.
One drawback is the leads break inside the pencil. Apparently, the pencil flexes, being made of plastic.
Over all, I'd recommend it.

Buy a box of pencils instead
The leads break, the leads jam, it costs almost as much in shipping as the cost of the product. An extremely poor value for the money.

Highly Recommended
Bought this and several other types of mechanical carpenters pencils to try because I got tired of constantly sharpening wooden carpenter pencils for construction work. After using it a few months I am very pleased. The function is good, the pencil body is strong and the lead has teeth so it is held tightly in the pencil body. There are two ways to use it. For any masonry, rough carpentry, tile layout or any outdoor work the lead works fine as is. The line is dark enough and thin enough. For anything where I need to have a finer line I rub it a few times on cement or on a piece of wood to make the lead line a little finer.
If you drop it that can break the lead inside as another reviewer commented. Its happened to me occasionally, but it is still a lot better than the old way. I'm not going back. Highly recommended.

Never sharpen = Never sharp. Poor Quality.
The purpose of this little guy is to avoid spending time sharpening your pencils, of course. It accomplishes that, at least for a while - but it falls short of being an improvement. Never sharpening a pencil means it is never sharp - which may be fine if you only need +/- 1/8" accuracy - but don't expect anything better than the dull, rounded end that usually signals the need for a sharpening.
This is what using the STRIKER will be like for the first few days. After that, the cheaply assembled plastic body begins to separate, the lead is no longer held in place, and the pencil gets thrown away.
My two STRIKERs didn't last long enough to need any of the lead refills they came with. Don't bother with this one.

With a sharp pen knife. If you need a sharp sharp tip, file it to a fine point on the sidewalk or with a file...or use a #2 pencil instead!
(ps many things can be sharpened on the sidewalk or a rock in a pinch....)

Home Depot sells a nifty sharpener for about a $1. Is quick and easy to use.
gary o | Aug 20, 2006
Home Depot has a handy dandy contractors pencil sharpener, it's orange...about 2.00, but if you can hold on to it...it works wonders........otherwise use your utility knife.
rdhedhottie | Aug 20, 2006
utility knife works better than the funny looking sharpener that comes in a Home Depot pro pack

I find that a nicely sharpened pocketknife works just fine.

Utility knife!! ?:)z
PaPa Norm | Aug 21, 2006
There such a pencil sharpener that fits the shape of the carpenters pencil. When you buuy a package of these pencils usually you also receive a sharpener inside the package. However, the best way is still the utility knife.
eayala9 | Aug 21, 2006
My late husband who was a contractor, simply used to carve it with his pocket knife. I do know, however, he only did this when he could not find the sharpener sold at most hardware stores, specifically for this pencil. Try a hardware store, contractors warehouse.....................they sell a specific hand held sharpener for this.

What is the purpose of a carpenter's pencil?
Aug 20, 2007 by freak | Posted in Engineering
Why must carpenters use rectangular pencils with no eraser? I mean what's the purpose? How?
The pencils are designed to be able to mark wood either with a fine line or a broad one, to not roll, and don't need erasers because you can't really erase marks on wood.

How to sharpen my carpenter's pencil?
Dec 22, 2008 by fooodfoodfood101 | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have a carpenter's pencil, actually 2, and I tried sharpening one with a knife, and then a vegetable peeler, and I cut my thumb, so is there any other way that you know of? Thanks
Home Depot or Lowes carry a very inexpensive carpenter pencil sharpener. I have always used a utility knife. Just make certain you stroke the blade away from you.

carpenters pencils are flat or square why?
Aug 31, 2006 by kenneth p | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
So they won't roll away when you set them down on the work station or job. Obviously they should not be placed on a project that's going into a planner or a table saw!
