OK for thin envelopes
The letter opener is good for thin enevelopes. It takes a little practice to help guide the enevelopes. Thicker enevelopes are a problem. They skip out. Doing the shorter ends works better, but harder to guide by hand. There is not a double guide. Not really high speed, like zip, zip, zip, etc. done.

GREAT LETTER OPENER
THIS LITTLE HAND HELD LETTER OPENER WORKS AS ADVERTISED. LETTERS CAN BE OPENED EITHER THE SHORT OR LONG WAY WITH EASE. JUST SHAKE DOWN THE CONTENTS AND SLIDE IT THROUGH. MUCH BETTER THAN STRUGGLING BY HAND AND MUCH CHEAPER THAN THE DESK MODELS. THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY.

bought this for my mom - she has tons of mail everyday - and she raves all the time about it, so I have to give it 5 stars.

Extremely handy and worth every penny
I have already bought 2 of these (one for me, one a gift for someone), and may even be buying more as extra Christmas gifts!
Sure they're not as sturdy as the electric letter openers that cost like $300 - but seriously they do what they're supposed to and that's all you can ask for. After opening a ton of mail, I'd find my hands were literally tired, so I needed something to help. I shopped around but all the letter openers out there that are electric or 'automatic' or what have you were way too expensive for my budget. After reading the great reviews on this one I tried it, and am so glad I did.
The instructions really do come in every language BUT English, however this is really not a problem at all since there are pictorial instructions literally on the opener itself. The batteries go in in a snap and in just a few seconds you're up and running. I've found the best way to use this product is to have it resting on a flat surface or table top, and run through the 'short' end of the envelope, as opposed to opening up the whole long side of one (make sure you 'sift' the contents to one side before opening!) You can use this opener in your hand if you want to, but beware user error is a little more likely that way, and you may get some lopsided cuts. Resting on a flat surface, you're going to get straight consistent cuts every time.
With some practice, using it by hand is fine too, but I prefer the consistency of having it on the table or desk.
It is very fast, and neatly trims a very small edge off of your envelope.
When I bought this item, I wasn't sure how much time or effort it really was going to save me, but truly it does save a lot of both - no more fussing with envelopes at all, this thing does all the work for you.
You could still take several envelopes, sift their contents down, and use a pair of scissors to cut open the short edges of several at a time ... which would save you the $17 and batteries ... but for as convenient as this product is to have sitting on your desk at all times, and for as well as it works, I highly recommend it. With it you don't have to mess around with envelopes at all, just zip 'em through. Plus it makes opening mail just a smidgen more fun.
Overall a great buy, and I'd imagine a valuable must-get for anyone with hand mobility problems.

It does the job
This letter opener works fine. I had to add my own little rubber feet, so that it didn't slide around, but having done that, now it works fine.

Awesome and simple letter opener
Used this on a few envelopes so far and it does a great job. It's automatic and makes opening envelopes of varying thicknesses effortless. Hope that it works for a long time and I won't have to change the batteries that often.

Works Well
This was purchased for my workplace as a replacement for an older model of same. It works a lot better than the last one -- it's quieter, with smoother, sharper cutting. It leaves a little cluster of paper strips for you to collect and toss in the trash, but what can you expect at this price?

Does what it is supposed to do
Title says it all. This isn't a Mars rover. It's a simple machine engineered to do a simple job and it does it well. No complaints. Good value for $25.00! (used)

not yet used
I have ordered this opener but have not used it yet. Here's why I am entering this now. I had a stroke several years ago which left my left hand and arm useless. Opening a letter, a simple act, is very difficult for a handicapped person. If you wish to give a thoughtful gift, long to be appreciated, to a handicapped person, consider this.

Used this more than 5 years
Tried other big boxes - some so loud they drowned out the whole office and ran continuously - but this little guy only runs when
it's actually cutting, then a little buzz. I keep waiting for the
cutters to dull or something but it's as sharp as new despite a
few stables, choking on a 10 page bundle or two. You can feed it
really fast - just stack the envelopes and keep slapping them
down on the feed deck. You do need to pick up the slittings, but it's just a one hand job. This is one of those little wonders you'll wonder how you could have lived without.
P.S. I'm an executive recruiter dealing with a never ending
stream of resumes in heavy stock envelopes.
Good luck.
P.S. I think I'd eve n buy a used one due to its durability.
